Every time I draw in public and people walking by see my work, I always get the reaction "I wish I had the natural talent to draw". To be honest this comment kind of gets to me. Even though I just started a little under four years ago, I got good quite fast. But I was not always this, as people say, "talented “. It took hard work and hundreds and hundreds of hours to teach myself the craft of drawing. So every time people say I was "born" with this ability, I feel like it devaluates the hours and work it took to learn this.
I started really picking up a pencil when in 2018.
I started off with small sketches and mainly drew in anime and comic style (even though I have never watched an anime or read comics). After a while, I discovered that I like drawing with pencils and kind of focused on that. One day I saw a realistic drawing of an eye, probably on Pinterest, and decided that I want to learn that. So, I hyper-fixated on ey
es first with pencils, then I tried colored pencils (which at the time
I absolutely hated it), and then tried charcoal.
I spent hours and hours drawing and got better very quickly. I taught myself how important texture is and tried to replicate what I saw. It took me about two years to teach myself ( and I know that is not a long time). But I guess what I have always had is an eye for small detail which is probably due to the overstimulation I have due to my AD(H)D. But even that, learning how to look closely at an object or reference is something you can learn.
So, if you really want to learn to draw, don´t make excuses, look out for a good teacher and ask me for a session! But don´t think that skills come to the individuals without any work behind them. Believe it or not, I was not a one-month-old baby, holding a pencil and drawing realistic drawings. I was NOT born with the skill of creating art.
What do you think? What makes you feel like art is a born talent?
And to my fellow artists, what comments about artists irritate you the most?
